A beautiful, handcrafted natural stone necklace with a copper bezel-set pendant. This necklace features my handcrafted metalsmith pendant with a stone called Sonora Dendritic Rhyolite (sometimes called Jasper). This is a stone that was discovered by the lapidary trade as recently as 2009. Found in one location in Sonora, Mexico, the beautifully patterned stone is usually an earthy gray or brown with maroon, white, and cheddar orange dendritic patterns or spots. It is neither a true jasper or rhyolite, being a softer stone.
That “soft” character is what drew me to this particular cabochon. I love the finish - the stone doesn’t take a high polish like real jasper - it is smooth like a river-tumbled stone and has a lovely satiny feel to it. I loved the way it is cut with the white-outlined maroon-brown spots down the length of the blue-gray stone. It has a “found pebble” quality to it that I sought to enhance just a little in the setting I designed.
I made a copper bezel setting for the 15 x 38mm asymmetrical teardrop. My setting is hand textured with punches to form a “halo” around the stone. The hanging bail is riveted to the stone setting using a sterling silver wire rivet for a little bright glint of silver in the earthy copper and stone pendant.
Hung on solid copper cable chain, the pendant is ready to wear at 19 inches long. I made the hook and eye closure from solid copper wire. Two small paintbrush jasper stone links decorate the chain at the closure.
