Ancient Roman glass dangle earrings are handcrafted in oxidized sterling silver for an antique look. These textural earrings were the result of my mind wandering on a winter's beach walk, combing for treasures. During winter, storms carry more energy and churn up shells, glass, driftwood, and seaweed, depositing it higher up along the shore. Winter wave and tide action also draws more sand away from the beach and back out to sea, potentially exposing more treasures that might have been buried under summer’s sand.
I used ancient Roman glass discs to represent “beachcombed treasures” like sea glass in these dangle earrings. I chose two discs, about 12mm in diameter, one blue, one blue-green. The discs are accented with 3mm faceted apatite gemstones, the greener stone atop the blue glass and the bluer gem with the greener glass. This subtle mismatch in color is enhanced by the darkened silver wire.
Hand wired in sterling silver, the Roman glass and apatite ornaments hang from handcrafted silver ovals with a blueish patina. This patina will likely fade over time to turn gray like the sterling, but it’s fun to have the metal adding ocean colors to the mix. Ear wires are sterling silver, 20 gauge.

Ancient roman glass beads are made from glass shards dated 2000 years back. The shards are locally mined in the Balkh province of Northern Afghanistan. Northern Afghanistan was on the Silk Road trading route and a hub for glass manufacturing during the Roman era. You can find visible age patina on the glass beads.
